Civil Defence Centres

In some emergencies, we may open an official Civil Defence Centre to provide information and services. As it is impossible to predict the effects of an emergency and our community's subsequent needs, we decide where to open a Civil Defence Centre when an emergency occurs.

When will we open a civil defence centre

In an emergency, we may identify that a particular community needs a civil defence centre, and we will choose a safe location in a place that meets the needs of those most effected. This is likely to be a venue such as a community centre, hall or sports facility. We have some pre-identified locations (see below), but those located at a school or in a high-risk area will be reviewed for their suitability, so this list may change in the future. These locations will NOT be automatically opened in an emergency.

Community Led Centres

After any disaster, people want to help those in need. The community will naturally come together for company, to share stories about their experience, find out information, offer support to those who need it, and look for assistance.  Some communities will establish their own community-led centres in a place that makes sense to them (it might be a marae, church or even the rugby club) and work together to meet the needs of their communities. They will be opened and run by people like you. Letting Civil Defence know what you are doing and if you need help or advice ensures we are able to support communities when they are looking after people and their animals following an emergency.

What to do in an emergency

  • If there is threat to life or property dial 111

  • If it is safe to stay at your home, this is the best place to be

  • If you need to evacuate or can’t get home, go to friends and whānau in a safe area

  • If you need assistance or information listen to the radio or visit the HB Emergency Facebook page.
