Take part in ShakeOut and be in to win

Send in your photos from this year’s national ShakeOut earthquake drill and be in to win a prize for yourself or your organisation.

Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is giving away water tanks and grab bags in each Hawke’s Bay district – Wairoa, Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay – to encourage people to practise their drop, cover hold and tsunami hīkoi in October.

Group Manager Ian Macdonald said the group wanted as many people in Hawke’s Bay as possible to take part in the ShakeOut drill.

“Hawke’s Bay residents can enter the competition by signing up to ShakeOut, taking part in the national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi any time during the week of ShakeOut from 12 to 18 October, and sending us their photos of the drill,” Mr Macdonald said.

“There are two categories to enter – the businesses, organisations and education providers category; OR the individuals, families and communities category. The first prize in each category for each district is a 200-litre Rainbutt water tank, and the second prize is a Grab&Go four-person emergency kit.”

Mr Macdonald said ShakeOut was a great opportunity for families, schools, businesses, individuals and communities to practise what to do in an earthquake or tsunami.

“Wherever you are at 9.30am on 15 October, you can take part in the drill – just drop, cover and hold for up to one minute, and practice your tsunami hīkoi to your safe location if you live, work or play in a tsunami evacuation zone.

“If you can’t make that time but still want to practise your drill and enter the competition, you can take part any time that week, 12 to 18 October, and send us your photos.”

Mr Macdonald said earthquakes could happen at any time and knowing the right action to take saves lives.

“Our experiences with COVID-19 this year have thrown into stark relief the need to be prepared for any emergency.

“Put some masks and hand sanitiser in your grab bag if you haven’t already, sign up to ShakeOut, and practise your earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi in October – making sure you keep your two-metre physical distance if you’re taking part in a group.

“We can’t predict when an earthquake or tsunami will happen, or where we will be, but we can protect ourselves and our families by practising what to do.”
