A joint message from Hawke’s Bay’s regional leaders

Tihei mauriora!

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha, huri noa, tēnā rā tātou katoa!

The New Zealand Government has extended its nationwide Alert Level 4 lockdown until 11:59pm on Tuesday, to protect our communities from the COVID-19 pandemic.

While we had hoped not to find ourselves in this position again, we assure everyone in Hawke’s Bay: we are here, and you are at the front of our minds.

We, as the region’s mayors, and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board and Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated chairs, are doing everything we can to work together and unite against COVID-19.

Our top priority is the health, safety, and welfare of everyone in our communities.

We’ve successfully stamped out the virus before and we will do it again. However, this time we’re dealing with the highly transmissible Delta variant of the virus. The Delta variant poses a greater threat to the health of people who contract it and a greater challenge to contain the spread of the virus in an outbreak.

It’s important we all follow the golden rules of Alert Level 4 to keep ourselves and each other safe:

  • Stay within your immediate household bubble.

  • If you feel unwell immediately self-isolate and call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 about getting tested.

  • Wear a face covering and keep 2 metres apart from other people at all times while in public.

  • Keep on scanning QR codes wherever you go.

  • Wash and sanitise hands often, especially if you have been out to get essential supplies.

If you are eligible for a vaccination this can be booked through www.bookmyvaccine.nz.  It will not only protect you against COVID-19, but also your whānau and community.

We must take every precaution to protect our community and help prevent community transmission of the virus.

Our regional partners and agencies are working together to plan and coordinate the fight against community transmission. Systems are in-place to identify and connect our vulnerable with essential support services.

We, as regional leaders, are meeting with Civil Defence and Hawke’s Bay District Health Board teams via video conference every day. We know what’s happening across our region and we’re determined to keep the effects of COVID-19 to a minimum, for all our people.

We know this is a challenging and scary time, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our community, and for our essential workers, business owners and farming community.
We’ve got strong and supportive communities here in Hawke’s Bay – let’s continue to play our part and take care of each other.

We will get through this together.

No reira e te whānau, kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui.

Tihei mauriora!
